Pioneer species are species of plants and decomposers that break down barren rock into soil. Pioneer species start Ecological Succession, and take part in Primary Succession. A good example of a pioneer species is the lichen. It is a fungi (like me!) that is able to break down rock, and can live in the harshest conditions, where the only sources of water are dew and fog.
